D'une fenêtre à l'autre / From One Window To Another, 2017
What goes on behind closed doors, windows and curtains? Colette Balcaen invites spectators to commit the indiscretion of attempting to discover the other side of a facade and imagine the stories overlooked from the past. For this, she deconstructs the fabric attached to windows. She pulled out threads to change the weave and to let just enough light peering through thus waking up the inner voyeur in each of us.
The tension between the construction and deconstruction of the linen panels describes windows that symbolize historical events and popular movements. The unravelling of linen fabric is a sort of scientific process that reveals my research on the historical evolution of this delicate yet sturdy plant.
