Story Keeper, 2015
The inspiration for Story Keeper originates from Madeleine Vionnet’s fashion styles in the 1930’s. Using diagonally folded vintage handkerchiefs, lined with her own hand writing on fabric, the artist semi-conceals stories from ancestors (some in French, some in English), She adds this piece to her ongoing project, Never, Will I Forget You. This gown is intended to be a poetic artwork that recalls her parents’ and grand-parents’ lives. Story Keeper honours the beauty appreciated by past generations as the artist imagines all the stories that these handkerchiefs could tell about joys, moments of tenderness and hardships, endured during the Great Depression.
